Acadia National Park is a romantic vision of the majestic treasure that is the great Maine outdoors. So it is no surprise then that Northeast Historic Film, located at the historic 1916 cinema building called the Alamo Theatre in Bucksport, Maine, has a thorough catalogue of vintage and antique film reels that feature Maine history and — luckily for us — a peek into Acadia’s distant past.

While searching through the archives, we found this short 2-minute digitized film reel of folks waiting to observe an eclipse from the top of Cadillac Mountain, Mount Desert Island, Maine, circa 1932.

It is fun to glimpse at the clothes, hairstyles, and cars from 84 years ago. Toward the end of the video, we can see some fun eyewear that looks like the 3D glasses that modern moviegoers would wear, which were likely worn to protect their eyes from the rays of the eclipse.

The next time you can catch an eclipse at Acadia won’t be until 2017. According to this solar and lunar calendar, Acadia will see a total solar eclipse on August 21, 2017, and a penumbral lunar eclipse on February 10, 2017.
